CHECKING IN, CHECKING OUT
I studied tourism and hospitality, and I even worked as a hotel administrator for a while. If you think hotels are just pretty lobbies, fresh sheets, and people asking for extra towels, trust me, there’s a whole different world happening behind the reception desk. You learn to stay polite when someone is clearly determined to have the worst day of their life, solve problems you didn’t create, and somehow look calm while figuring out three things at once. I’ve met all kinds of people, and some of them could honestly have their own sitcom. The experience taught me a lot about patience, communication, and the fact that you can never predict what the next person walking through the door will ask for. I appreciate a peaceful day much more now, although I still catch myself noticing hotel interiors and judging the reception area whenever I travel somewhere.
THINGS YOU DON'T SEE AT RECEPTION
Working in a hotel made me realize that people are much more interesting than their first impressions. Someone can walk in looking incredibly serious and end up being the funniest person you've met all week. Someone else can be charming for thirty seconds and then ask for something that makes you question humanity a little. And then there are the guests who leave almost no impression at all, until you remember one tiny detail about them days later. I used to think hospitality was mostly about making people comfortable, but it's also about reading situations, knowing when to talk, and knowing when a smile is the best answer you have. I still find myself observing people in everyday situations, quietly inventing little stories about where they're going and what their lives might look like outside that moment. Maybe it's just a habit from my old job. Or maybe people-watching has always been my unofficial second hobby.
A PENCIL AND A QUIET EVENING
Drawing is one of those things I can return to whenever I need a break from everything else. I don't always start with a clear idea, and I definitely don't finish every picture I begin. Sometimes I see a face, a particular outfit, or an interesting combination of shapes and feel like trying to put it on paper. Other times I just sit down with a pencil and see what happens. I like that drawing doesn't require me to explain anything to anyone. There's no need to find the right words or make a decision immediately; I can just work on one little detail until it feels right. Of course, sometimes the picture looks nothing like what I imagined, and suddenly I'm staring at it like it personally betrayed me. But that's part of the fun. I don't think every hobby needs to become a career or a masterpiece. Sometimes it's enough to enjoy making something with your own hands.
MY VERSION OF A PERFECT DAY
My perfect day doesn't need a detailed itinerary, five different locations, or a schedule that looks like a business meeting. I'd rather wake up without immediately having to rush somewhere, have something good to eat, and leave enough time to do whatever I actually feel like doing. Maybe I'll spend an hour drawing, maybe I'll find a new place to explore, or maybe I'll get distracted by something completely unrelated and lose track of time. I've learned that I enjoy little things much more when I'm not trying to turn them into a special occasion. A good conversation can make an ordinary afternoon memorable, and a quiet evening at home can be better than a whole weekend of plans. I like having things to look forward to, but I also appreciate days when nothing particularly exciting happens. Not every moment needs a story attached to it. Sometimes a day is good simply because it feels comfortable, uncomplicated, and entirely your own.
